Abstract
Polyurethanes which are free from isocyanate groups are stabilized by the addition of a hydrazide derivative in such amount that there are 10 to 2000 milligram equivalents of -CO-NH-NH2 and/or -CS-NH-NH2 groups per kilogram of polyurethane. The hydrazide derivatives may be semicarbazides, thiosemicarbazides, polyester hydrazides. Many suitable compounds are specified. The polyurethane may be derived from a polyether, polyester or polysteramide. In Example (1), an ethylene glycol/butylene glycol-adipic acid polyester was reacted in solution in chlorobenzene with diphenylmethane 4,41-diisocyanate and then with carbodihydrazide in water and dimethyl formamide. The polymer was pigmented with TiO2 and stabilized with (a) adipic acid dihydrazide, (b) e -hydroxy caproic acid hydrazide, (c) e -amino caproic acid hydrazide, (d) m-xylylene bis-semicarbazide, (e) piperazine - N,N1 - dicarboxylic acid dihydrazide, (f) isophthalic acid dihydrazide, (g) terephthalic acid monobutyl ester hydrazide, (h) ethylene glycol-adipic acid polyester hydrazide, (i) hydrazine dicarboxylic acid dihydrazide, (j) semicarbazide, (k) thiosemicarbazide, (l) mixture of hexamethylene-bis-semicarbazide and palmitic acid hydrazide. In Example (7) foams derived from an ethylene glycol adipic acid polyester and polypropylene ether glycol, toluene diisocyanate and water were saturated in an aqueous solution of carbodihydrazide, rung out on rollers and dried.
