Abstract

A vehicle 1, Figs. 1, 2, is separated from a tubular tunnel 2 by an air flow created by propeller P, a supporting cushion being formed between tunnel 2 and vehicle 1; adjustable surfaces 4-11 control the attitude of the vehicle which has retractable wheels 12-14 arranged at the corners of a triangle for engaging rails 12<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>1</SP>, 14<SP>1</SP>. The surfaces 4, 5, 6, 7 are independently adjustable and are mounted in a cylinder 3. In other arrangements, two propellers or a reaction motor distribute air through tubes mainly to the bottom of the vehicle; several reaction motors are distributed along the length of the vehicle; the vehicle and/or tunnel may be oval in cross-section. In Figs. 12, 13 the vehicle has reaction motors 57, 58, 59 delivering air and gases through pipes 60, 61, 62, 63 to form the air gap, and has retractable wheels 64, 65, 66 which are shown extended at 64<SP>1</SP>, 65<SP>1</SP>, 66<SP>1</SP>. Horizontal, vertical and rear control flaps are provided at 67-73, 91-98 controlled automatically according to the width of the air gap by mechanical sensors 73<SP>1</SP>, 73<SP>11</SP>, or by supersonic crystal oscillators 74-77; pressure measuring means may be used to control the flaps. A control system is described with reference to Fig. 14, not shown, employing a computer supplied with signals from the sensors and flaps and controlling the air feed from the various motors 57, 58, 59.
