Abstract

1,019,082. Moulding composite articles. GEORGE ANGUS & CO. Ltd. April 18, 1962 [April 24, 19611, No. 14713/61. Heading B5A. A method of forming and conveying composite units to be moulded into articles, each unit consisting of a blank of plastic material at least partially embedding an insert to be united therewith by moulding, comprises moving a strip of plastic material longitudinally successively locating inserts in overlapping relationship with the plastic material, each insert being embedded in the plastic material by pressing them together, the plastic material being cut to form a blank with the insert embedded therein as a composite unit, and the composite units so formed being then entrained in continued movement of the plastic material remaining as a strip which serves as a conveyer for delivering the composite units for subsequent moulding. A synthetic rubber strip 2 is fed intermittently through a mechanism 5 which cuts annular blanks from the strips 2 and presses them into metal inserts 6. The mechanism 5 comprises a lower bolster 21 and an upper bolster 22 slidable vertically on guide pillars 23 and forms the head of a downwardly acting pneumatic press. Within the upper bolster 22 is a cylinder 27, and piston 30 with tubular piston-rod 31 having a ring knife 33 mounted as a sleeve at its lower end, and a stem 29 depending from the cylinder head with a cylindrical plunger knife 32 mounted on its lower end. A metal ring 6 is positioned on a tubular pommel 39 on lower bolster 21 and the strip 2 is held stationary above the ring 6 and between the two bolsters; the knife arrangements 32, 33 are brought down to cut out a ring blank and press it into the metal insert 6. A pneumatic stripper ring 40 in the lower bolster 21 and a stripper ring 35 in the upper bolster 22 permit the composite article to be retained in the strip 2.
