Abstract

1,018,391. Coating with pre-formed sheets. STONEY BROS. & CO. Ltd. Feb. 11, 1964 [Jan. 14, 1963], No. 1610/63. Heading B6G. [Also in Divisions A3 and F2] In a method of covering articles such as umbrella handles, and shoe heels, with shrinkable thermoplastic sheet material, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, the sheet is first converted into a sleeve by seam-welding together, e.g. by di-electric welding, two overlapping marginal portions arranged edge-to-edge then turning the sleeve inside-out, so that the welded margins lie within it, slipping it on to the article, and finally shrinking the sleeve on to the article. If desired, the sleeve may be expanded, e,g. by compressed air, to facilitate its introduction on to the article. Shrinking may be accomplished by heating the whole assembly in an oven temperature of, e.g., 80-150‹ C. Alternatively instead of, or at the same time as, heating the sleeve may be shrunk by treating it with an organic liquid, e.g. ethyl-acetate or with a vapour of such a liquid. The article, or the sleeve or both, may be coated with an adhesive before the sleeve is fitted to an article. In one embodiment the residual solvent of the adhesive coating the article serves as the organic liquid causing shrinkage of the sleeve which may also be treated with additional liquid. The sheet material of the sleeve may be initially embossed or printed with a decorative pattern. As shown a rectangular sheet 10 of shrinkable plastics has its two opposite edges seam-welded at 12 to form a cylinder with a slight taper 14 at a closed end. Reversal of the sleeve can be accomplished manually or by using a vacuum tube.
