Abstract

1,018,188. Electrically determining a chemical or physical condition. N. KAISER. Nov. 1, 1962, No. 41365/62. Heading G1N. A method of testing the chemical and or physical condition of a medium in which a plurality of tests are carried out simultaneously, or in continuous sequence, comprises directing high frequency waves either as a continuous band or at a plurality of individual frequencies on to the medium either simultaneously or in continuous sequence, or in a continuous sequence of scans, the period of scan being substantially shorter than the expected life of intermediate products, each of the tests involving the measurement of a phase shaft, and/or energy variation, and or alteration of some other electrical quantity, at at least one frequency, resulting from their impinging on the medium, and the results being registered continuously and individually. The waves may be applied in pulses, and the frequency chosen may be such that phase changes are an indication of dielectric constant, or that molecular resonance occurs within the medium. The medium may be situated within a tubular conductor and may be irradiated by a beam at the Brewster angle. The specimen and a reference sample may be included in the arms of a bridge. Applications of the invention referred to are the control of maturing and polymerisation in artificial silk, chemical analyses, the manufacture of insulation, the control of aging processes, the measure of hygroscopic properties and water content, the detection of changes in bacteriological cultures including short lived intermediate products, and the continuous indication of the decomposition of albumen.
