Abstract
Salts having (1) an organo tin grouping containing two valencies unsatisfied by the organo substituents and (ii) the residue of an alpha-, beta- or gamma mercapto-carboxylic acid, in which salt both the mercapto group and the carboxylic acid group are bonded to the same or different tin atoms in the molecule, are used as heat and light stabilizers in chlorine containing synthetic plastics compositions, especially PVC. Compounds specified include dibutyl tin beta mercapto propionate. The compositions may contain a plasticizer e.g. dioctyl phthalate.ALSO:The invention comprises salts having (i) an organo tin grouping containing two valencies unsatisfied by the organo substituents and (ii) the residue of an alpha-, beta- or gamma-mercapto carboxylic acid, in which salt both the mercapto group and the carboxylic acid group are bonded to the same or different tin atoms in the molecule. The mercapto carboxylic acid may be mercapto-acetic, -propionic or -butyric acid. The organo substituents on the tin atom may be alkyl (C1-C12, preferably C4), aralkyl (benzyl, phenylethyl), aryl or alkaryl. They may be prepared by reacting the two reactants in a solvent, e.g. toluene, which forms an azeotrope with water.
