Abstract

A composition comprises polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of a major proportion of vinyl chloride and a minor proportion of vinyl acetate and, as a stabilizer against the deleterious effect of heat, a mercaptal or mercaptol derivative of a mercaptan, a mercaptoacid ester, or a mercaptoalkanol ester. Examples describe the use of mercaptals derived from benzaldehyde or 2-ethyl hexaldehyde and nonyl or iso-octyl mercaptoacetate, and of mercaptols derived from benzophenone or methyl isobutyl ketone and iso-octyl mercaptoacetate. The Specification contains lists of other suitable mercaptal and mercaptol derivatives. The compositions may also contain other stabilizers such as organotin compounds and antimony compounds, and dioctyl phthalate or a mixture of dioctyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate as plasticizer.
