Abstract

1,017,961. Reactors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Jan. 18, 1963 [Jan. 22, 1962], No. 2287/62. Heading G6C. A blower for a gas-cooled reactor is removably mounted within the pressure vessel in a housing extending through the vessel wall, valve means on the housing serving to isolate the vessel interior from the exterior atmosphere when the blower is withdrawn from the housing. As shown, a housing 15 extends from the exterior 11 through the wall of a concrete pressure vessel 10 into the pressurized interior divided into two parts 12, 14 by a bulkhead 13, the gas blower 20 serving to circulate the gas from the part 12 into the part 14. The housing comprises a fixed tube 16 and a sleeve 17 axially movable on a sleeve 32 constituting the stator of the blower. The sleeve 17 is slidable in the bulkhead 13 and supported at its other end by a pivoted link 54 carried by an arm 52 pivoted at 53 and having a counterweight 51. The blower rotor 21 has variable-pitch blades 24 which draw the gas through an inlet 35, over the outside of a conical diffuser 39 fixed by vanes 40 to the stator 32 and expel the gas through the end 17a of the sleeve 17. A ram 60 slidably mounted in the diffuser is subjected to a control gas pressure by gas supplied by pipe 63 to a chamber 61, the ram 60 carrying a cap 55 which may seal the sleeve end 17a. The cap 55 is connected through links 57, 58 to vanes 59 fixed to the sleeve 17, Fig. 4. Normally, the parts have the positions shown in Fig. 1 and in order to remove the blower the control gas pressure in chamber 61 is reduced so that differential pressure acting on the cap 55 causes the latter to move to the Fig. 4 position in which the end 17a is sealed. Locking dowels 18 are released (described in detail with reference to Fig. 2, not shown) whereby the sleeve 17 may slide on the stator 32 so that the differential pressure on the cap 55 causes the latter to push the sleeve and the inlet 35 is closed, the end of the sleeve 17 making sealing engagement with the opposed end of the tube 16. The blower 20 may now be withdrawn.
