Abstract
A transportable power unit comprises tubular housing (1, 2, 3) and a prime mover (13, 15) having a rotary drive shaft to which rotary machinery (14) is coupled. The prime mover and the machinery are contained within and supported by the housing, which is preferably of circular cross-section. The axis of rotation of the shaft is arranged to be substantially coincident with the shear centre of the tubular housing. The power unit may include machinery such as generators or pumps for off-shore oil rigs or the like. The generator (14) or pump will be driven by a prime mover such as a gas turbine (13, 15) and the support is especially suited to resisting the extremely high torque loadings which can occur with such machinery.
Description
SPECIFICATION
A support housing for machinery
This invention relates to a support to enclose, insulate and protect machinery.
It is often necessary to support heavy machinery in such a way that the large forces resulting from operation, sudden seizure or transport of the equipment can be resisted.
Similarly the machinery may require some enclosure, insulation, support and protection to resist the effects of severe weather and other conditions.
The present invention is particularly, but not exclusively, concerned with an application where the machinery is an electricity generator or pump for an off-shore oil or accomodation rig or remote land based site. Such machinery can take the form of a gas turbine set as a prime mover driving a dynamo or pump either directly or through a gearbox.
Conventionally such machinery is mounted on a base frame suitably proportioned to withstand the high stresses and forces involved during operation or transport whilst maintaining the proper alignment of the equipment and couplings. A light housing fixed to the base frame serves to protect and insulate the equipment from environmental conditions and protect the environment from the effects of equipment noise.
It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a support frame in the form of a monocoque housing which is considerably lighter in weight than a conventional base frame and enclosure arrangement and is better suited to resist the high forces involved and also minimises noise levels in the surrounding area.
The invention provides a tubular support and housing which may be circular in cross section and in which for example rotating machinery may be supported. The shape of the housing is particularly suited to resist the extremely high torque loadings occurring on seizure of the rotating machinery and any outof-balance dynamic loads resulting from normal or abnormal operation or during transport. The shell wall of the support is designed to carry the stresses associated with all the conditions of loading. In addition the shape of the support is suited to resist the effects of environmental loads resulting from severe weather conditions and provides the facility of completely enclosing the equipment in insulation material to reduce noise transmissions to the surroundings to acceptable limits.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example, reference being made to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1. is a perspective view of the monocoque housing according to the invention for supporting and enclosing machinery.
Figure 2. is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing an example of the monocoque housing supporting an air intake (11), inlet silencer (12) and a gas engine (13) driving an alternator (14) through a power turbine (15).
Figure 3. is an underneath perspective view showing a support configuration.
Figure 4. is a perspective view showing a support configuration in which wheeled undercarrieages are used to provide a mobile unit.
Figure 5. is a vertical section through the monocoque housing wall showing the position of fire and noise insulation.
Figure 6. is a horizontal section through the monocoque housing wall showing the position of fire and noise insulation.
The monocoque housing consists of a circular cylinder (1) stiffened as necessary at intervals along its length by circular frames (2) and stiffened as necessary by longitudinal circumferentially spaced stringers (3) fixed between the circular frames.
The cylindrical housing is provided with an internal floor (4) supported from the housing to carry the machinery and provide a working access platform. The void below the floor (5) is used to store fuel, oil, gas and air in suitable containers and carry service and cable ducts.
Access to internal equipment for the purpose of maintenance, inspection or control is accomplished through openings (6) in the shell wall of the housing, these openings being normally covered by removable or opening panels.
At least one permanent opening (7) is provided in the housing wall through which the exhaust gases from the prime-mover are directed in suitable ductwork.
The housing may be provided with noise abatement and fire protection insulation (8) adjacent to the shell wall.
The housing is supported on at least three supports (9) designed to minimise the effects of distortion occuring in the foundation structure which would otherwise result in misalignment of the connecting shafts of the rotating equipment. The arrangement of supports for a static installation may be as diagrammatically illustrated in Fig. 3.
Alternatively the monocoque housing may be supported on a wheeled undercarriage (10) to facilitate transport of the unit overland.
