Abstract

1,017,913. Electric lighting fittings. THORN ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 10, 1964, No. 28678/64. Heading F4R. A fitting for one or more low-pressure mercury vapour electric discharge lamps comprises an enclosure all or part of which is light diffusing and which is provided with at least one aperture associated with each lamp and at the top of the fitting with one or more openings of larger total area than that of the said aperture or apertures, the latter being arranged so that a small region of the envelope of each lamp is cooled by convection. The fitting shown includes two lamps 11, 12 carried by pairs of lampholders 14 mounted on a spur 13 which also carries a reflector plate 15 and brackets 16 supporting a light-diffusing enclosure 18. Openings 19 are provided between the plate 15 and the member 18, small circular apertures 20, 21 are provided in the base of the member 18 one beneath each lamp. The air from the apertures 20, 21 produces a cold spot on the envelope of each lamp causing a drop of mercury to condense there and thereby reduce the vapour pressure of the mercury to the optimum value. Each aperture may be formed with a small chimney extending inwards.
