Abstract

The cracking of olefins having a carbon to carbon single bond in a position beta to the double bond is effected in the presence of at least 0.005 mol per mol of olefin of a sulphide, hydrosulphide or polysulphide of an amine, ammonia or hydrazine. The cracking results in a diolefin and paraffin or two olefin molecules; feeds being specified to produce 2-, 3- and 4-methylpentadiene-1,3 2,3-dimethylbutadiene-1,3, 2-ethylbutadiene-1,3, butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, ethylene, propylene, butenes, 2- or 3-methylbutene-1, pentene-1 or -2, and 2,3-dimethylbutene-1 or -2. Reaction is effected at 500-900 DEG C. for 5 minutes to 0.001 second in the presence of a diluent if desired, and up to 0.5 mol of the sulphur compound per mol of olefin.
