Abstract
1,017,598. Air cushion vehicles. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. July 3, 1963 [July 3, 1962], No. 25360/62. Heading B7K. An air cushion vehicle has at least a portion of its underside provided with flexible extensions forming a plurality of elongated inflated tubes depending from said underside and closed at their lower ends to create a flexible barrier to the escape of air from the air cushion on which the vehicle is wholly or partially supported. The rigid base 10 is extended by a flexible shirt 14 comprising a plurality of tubes 15 sealed at their ends 16 and connected to a ring conduit 19 which is supplied with pressure fluid through a pressure reducer 20 and a relief and exhaust valve 21. Air for a plenum chamber cushion is supplied through a conduit 11 and in operation passage of the vehicle past an obstacle such as 22 will cause certain of the tubes 15 to be deflected as shown at 23. In further embodiments (Figs. 3 and 5, not shown) air for the cushion is supplied through a peripheral nozzle formed by a plurality of juxtaposed ducts which are each supported by one or two inflatable tubes such as shown in Fig. 1. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 929,671 and 958,996.
