A method of rolling sheets in a reversing mill comprises the steps of rolling a reference sheet noting the roll gaps without load, sheet thickness, and rolling force for a number of passes, and rolling a subsequent sheet, the variations in thickness and rolling force in the first two passes from the reference sheet serving to alter the roll gap under no load of subsequent passes by means of a calculator such that the desired final thickness of sheet is obtained. As shown, information from X-ray generators and gauges 5a, 5b and 6a, 6b of the strip thickness, from strain gauge dynamometers 12 of the rolling force, and from a numerical coding device 8, controlled by a coding disc 9 and photo-electric cell 10, of the roll gap without load, is fed to a calculator 13, and the roll gap to be used is registered on a numerical counter 14.
