Abstract
1,016,622. Particle accelerators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Aug. 26, 1964 [Sept. 3, 1963], No. 34829/63. Heading H1D. An electron accelerator includes a linear accelerator section, deflecting magnets for deflecting electrons at the outlet of the accelerator section back to its inlet, means for introducing fresh electrons from an electron source laterally into the electron stream at the inlet end of the accelerator section, and means for giving the fresh electrons entering the stream an initial forward component of velocity in the direction of the stream. Electrons from the gun 1 of a race-track microtron are deflected by magnet 11 into a linear accelerator 5 which includes an initial bunching section for rapid acceleration up to a speed near c, and a focusing coil 10. The issuing stream is then deflected back to the inlet of section 5 by pairs of polepieces 6 and 3, the additional pairs of polepieces 13 and 14 producing a deflection of the accelerated stream sufficient to counteract the effect of that subsequently produced by the magnet 11. Suitable relationships between the magnetic fields in elements 11, 13, and 14 are described.
