Abstract

978,839. Linear particle accelerators. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 24, 1963 [July 26, 1962], No. 28785/62. Heading H1D. In a linear particle accelerator the buncher section 3 is followed by a section 5 in which the bunches are laterally deflected by a cyclically varying field so that only selected bunches are permitted to pass through the aperture 9. As shown, the section 5 which is separated from section 3 by a drift tube 21 is an iris-loaded waveguide supporting a backward wave of E 11 mode and at a slightly different frequency from the forward E 01 wave in section 3. The number of bunches passing through aperture 9 is selected by adjustment of a variable attenuator in the input waveguide 25 to sec- tion 5 and the selected bunches may be further accelerated by a waveguide similar to section 3. The electron gun is energized for a specific time interval after energization of sections 3 and 5. The particles accelerated may be positive particles instead of electrons.
