Abstract
780,999. Mass spectrometers. NEDERLANDSE CENTRALE ORGANISATIE VOOR TOEGEPAST - NATUURWETENSCHAP - PELIJK ONDERZOEK. Dec. 9, 1954 [Dec. 12, 1953], No. 35729/54. Class 39(1). In a mass spectrometer the ions are accelerated through two spaced apart deflector systems to which time variable electric fields are applied, at least one of the fields having a time variable intensity. One field may change in direction, or in both direction and intensity. In Fig. 1, the deflector systems 1, 2 are parallel to one another and are connected to a sawtooth voltage supply. The periods of both fields may be the same, or the fields may have frequencies which are integral multiples of some fundamental frequency. A biasing voltage is applied to the second system to select the required ions. The lens 3, 4, 5 between the two systems may be replaced by a mirror. A cylindrical lens or cylindrical mirror may be used with a line ion source instead of a point source. In Fig. 2 with two deflector systems at right angles to one another each mass is characterized by a particular curve on the screen. A lens need not be used in this embodiment.
