764,337. Discharge apparatus. METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Nov. 26, 1954 [Feb. 1, 1954], No. 2950/54. Class 39(1). An electron beam for the coradiation of materials is produced in an enclosed chamber, passes out through an electron permeable window and is thus reflected laterally by a magnetic field so as to traverse a curved path and is spread laterally to give it an elongated cross section. The beam from the metal foil window 2 of a linear accelerator a Cetatron or a Van de Graeff generator 1 passes between its pole pieces 8 of a permanent magnet or electromagnet. The pole pieces are splayed and as in Fig. 4, so that the beam is elongated in the plane of curvature producing a more even distribution of intensity in the beam. A second metal foil may be inserted to scatter the beam before coradations material on a conveyer belt. In Fig. 6, the pole pieces are elongated at 11 and so shaped that the beam is split into two components 12, 13, the component 12 bombarding one side of material target 14 and the other component 13 being deflected through 180 degrees by further poles 15 to bombard the other side of material 4. Pole pieces 8 may be shaped or material of graded reluctance inserted to render the beam component 13 non- uniform.
