Abstract
Arsenic and/or antimony impurities in HF produced by acidification of fluorite are oxidized to fluoarsenate and/or fluoantimonate by KMnO4, K2Cr2O7, PbO2, H2SO5 or peroxides in the presence of alkali metal ion and pure HF is distilled from the product; the alkali metal ion may be a constituent of the oxidizing agent or added, e.g. as KF. The arsenic and/or antimony content of HF may thus be reduced from 0.0005-0.1% to less than 0.0003%, e.g. to 0.0001%. In an example 500 kg. anhydrous MF containing 5g. each As, Sb (0.001%) was stirred with 100 g. fine KMnO4 (0.02%) in an iron boiler and distilled yielding 480 kg. HF containing 0.29 g. As (0.00006%) and 0.48 g. Sb (0.0001%) and 20 kg. residue containing 4.70 g. As, 4.50 g. Sb.
