Abstract

A stable latex of a copolymer of at least one a -olefin with at least one non-conjugated diene hydrocarbon is prepared by mixing with high-shear agitation at a temperature between 15 DEG and 75 DEG C. a solution of the copolymer in an inert organic solvent with water in the presence of an emulsifying agent in amount sufficient to allow the formation of a stable oil in water emulsion, and removing the solvent from the mixture, e.g. by stripping. Many a -olefins and non-conjugated dienes are listed. Copolymers exemplified are ethylene/1, 4-hexadiene, ethylene/propylene/1,4-hexadiene, and ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene. Suitable solvents include trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, and n-hexane. The solvent is either mixed directly with the copolymer or mixed with a composition comprising the copolymer and additives such as oil extenders, fillers, and antioxidants. One exemplified composition comprises a copolymer with bentonite clay, a terpene resin, a naphthenic petroleum oil, and oleic acid. The emulsifying agents are preferably non-ionic or anionic, and emulsification modifiers such as ammonium caseinate or sodium alginate may be included. In one example a polychloroprene latex is added to the formed copolymer latex. The copolymer of ethylene/propylene/1,4-hexadiene is prepared by polymerizing the monomers using a VOCl3/diisobutyl aluminium chloride catalyst.ALSO:Specially prepared stable cationic latices of copolymers (see Division C3) may be incorporated into Portland cement to improve, for example, its power of adhesion.ALSO:A specially prepared stable latex of a copolymer of at least one a -olefin and at least one non-conjugated diene hydrocarbon is used to impregnate paper by immersion of the paper in the latex and then blotting, drying and curing the impregnated paper. The latex is prepared by mixing with high-shear agitation at a temperature between 15 DEG and 75 DEG C. a solution of the copolymer in an inert organic solvent with water in the presence of an emulsifying agent in an amount sufficient to allow the formation of a stable oil in water emulsion, and removing the water from the mixture e.g. by stripping. Many a -olefins and non-conjugated dienes are listed. Copolymers exemplified are ethylene/1, 4-hexadiene, ethylene/propylene/1, 4-hexadiene, and ethylene/propylene/dicyclopentadiene. Suitable solvents include trichloroethylene, carbon tetrachloride, and n-hexane. The solvent is either mixed directly with the copolymer, or mixed with a composition comprising the copolymer and additives such as oil extenders, fillers, and antioxidants.
