Abstract

1,016,326. Electric measuring bridges. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 26, 1964 [Nov.26, 1963], No. 46680/63. Heading G1U. An A. C. electrical bridge network comprises four arms constituted respectively by a specimen capacitor X whose capacitance and loss tangent are to be measured, a variable standard capacitor S, the series connection of a variable resistor R and a first ratio coil r1 and a second ratio coil r2 inductively coupled with the first coil. A further capacitor C is connected in shunt with R, r1 and at least part of r2, and a null detector is coupled at N to the two ratio coils. The second ratio coil may consist of an arrangement of tapped coils (Fig. 2 not shown). To balance the arrangement, the turns ratio of the two coils r1 and r2 are adjusted for capacitance balance, and the ratios of C and R are adjusted for quadrature balance. At balance, the loss tangent in the specimen is given by tan # = tan 2# where tan # = wRC w being the supply frequency. This result shows that the loss tangent can be derived with no zero error due to the D.C. resistances of the ratio coils.
