Abstract

1,016,115. Loud-speakers. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 18, 1964 [June 21, 1963; Sept. 26, 1963], No. 25283/64. Heading H4J. The drive portion of a loud-speaker diaphragm 1 is attached to the base of a conical member 8, the apex of which is secured to a transducer 6 for producing a voltage output corresponding to the acceleration of the drive portion. The voltage output is fed back degeneratively to an amplifier 4 controlling the loud-speaker. The transducer 6 is preferably of piezo-electric crystal material. The conical member 8 points in the direction of radiated sound and is rigid axially but flexible radially, the latter flexibility preventing transmission of radial forces from the diaphragm 1. At its lower end the conical member 8 is closed by a plate 10 so that substantially no pressure variations are produced in the air surrounding the transducer 6. The output of transducer 6 is applied to a network 7 which integrates oscillations of frequency greater than a frequency equivalent to a wavelength equal to one half the circumference of the diaphragm 1. Network 7 passes lower frequencies unaffected. The output of network .7 is applied to amplifier 4 as a negative feedback voltage which depends substantially linearly on the square root of the sound energy over the entire frequency range. The loudspeaker is of the moving coil type and the ratio of the masses of the transducer 6 and coil 3 is less than 1: #10. The conical member 8 is of aluminium and is connected to earth to avoid induction of ripple voltages in the transducer 6.
