Abstract

1,015,645. Slip couplings. GEO. W. KING Ltd. June 23, 1964 [May 22, 1963], No. 20510/63. Heading F2C. A slip coupling between driving and driven shafts 10, 11 consists of a disc 34 secured to the driven shaft 11 and engaged between friction elements 33 whose gripping action is varied by means connected to the driving shaft 10 to provide for smooth acceleration and retardation of the driven shaft on starting and stopping of the driving shaft. The friction elements 33 are carried by members 31, 32 bolted to cage members 22, 23 adjustably loaded by a series of compression springs 28, and also mounted between cages 22, 23 are pairs of T- shaped members 20 each urged by springs 26 against an abutment 15 on a longitudinal arm 14 engaging a radial arm 13 secured to the driving shaft 10. Upon starting the latter from rest the initial rotation of the arms 13 results in rotation of arms 14 and abutments 15 to displace members 20 against the action of springs 26 and thus reduce the force exerted by members 22, 23 on friction elements 33, to induce slip in the coupling which is eliminated as speed increases by the return of arms 13, 14 to their normal relative positions.
