Abstract

The feltability of hair and fur is improved by treatment with an aqueous solution containing a phosphonium compound having the formula <FORM:1015620/D1-D2/1> in which X- is a monobasic anion preferably acetate or chloride, R1 is CnH2nOH and R2, R3 and R4 are CnH2nOH or CnH2n+1 and n is an integer of value equal to 1-4 and subsequently drying. 0.5-15 parts by weight of the phosphonium compound per 100 parts of fur or hair may be applied to the fur or hair as an aqueous solution buffered to a pH of 0.5-9.5 at a liquor to fur or hair ratio of 0.01-2.00. The solution may be applied to skins, e.g. rabbit or hare skins, by hand brushing, machine brushing, machine roller, spraying or pad mangling, the skin then dried in a hot air oven, by infra-red radiation or at ambient conditions of temperature and humidity, if desired stored and the fur then cut from the skins and subjected to forming, hardening and planking.
