Abstract
1,014,939. Measuring fluid flow. R. H. BAKER. Aug. 11, 1964 [Aug. 12, 1963], No. 31793/63. Heading G1R. In a method of measuring the rate of flow of a liquid current the apparatus shown is lowered into the liquid at the place and depth where the current is to be measured and aligned with the current by vanes 26, 27 and a switch 21 is then closed by depressing a switch arm 75 anticlockwise to start a stop watch 19 and to energize a solenoid 17 to lift a platform 29 to actuate a mechanism which releases one ball 14 at a time from a magazine 15 on to a guide path formed by "T" shaped guides, 23. The released ball 14, before entering a net 16, lifts a roller mounted on a pivoted arm, Fig. 5 (not shown), to pivot a lever 55 which moves a magnet 53 to activate a magnetically operated switch 18 thus energizing a solenoid 22 which moves the switch arm 75 clockwise through apivoted arm 78 to open the switch 21 and stop the watch 19. The time taken by the ball 14 to travel along a known length of guide path enables the current speed to be calculated. The balls 14, which may be solid or hollow have approximately the same specific gravity of the liquid in which they are used.
