Abstract
1,014,932. Embossing thermoplastic sheets. COMMERCIAL PLASTICS Ltd. Nov. 22, 1962, No. 44260/62. Heading B5A. In a method for producing embossed relief effects on thermoplastic sheet material the material is brought into contact at an elevated temperature with an embossing surface a depression in which is sufficiently deep that the thermoplastic material is caused to partially enter the depression without coming into contact with the bottom thereof. The plastic sheet material may first be subjected to a preliminary surface treatment at a temperature higher than when in contact with the embossing surface. In one embodiment the embossing surface has depressions of such a depth that the sheet material comes into contact with the bottom thereof thus giving a matt finish on the material surface and other depressions three to five times deeper the bottom of which is not contacted by the sheet material so that it retains a gloss finish. The sheet material may be a vinyl chloride polymer or copolymer or a polyolefin and may also comprise a laminate of two or more sheets or films of different colours.
