Abstract
1,014,277. Mechanical seals. CRANE PACKING Ltd. Nov. 16, 1964 [Nov. 27, 1963], No. 46808/63. Heading F2B. In a mechanical seal the rotary seal face member 5 is formed as a centrifugal impeller or fan whereby the surrounding fluid is caused to flow through the member and act as a coolant. A rotary shaft 1 is sealed in its housing 2 by a non-rotary seal member 3 urged axially by springs 4 against a seal member 5 secured to the shaft by screws 6. The member 5 is sealed by a wedge ring 7 to a flange 8 on a closure member 9. The member 5 has L-shaped passages 10, 11 extending from the face remote from its rubbing face 12 to its outer periphery and acting to pump the surrounding fluid through the passages to serve as a coolant. In a modification, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) the member 3 is sealed to the closure member 9 by a bellows and is eccentric to the member 5. The cooling passages 10, 11 may be in the form of continuous curved passages or open notches separated by fins or blades.
