Abstract

An example described a soap comprising olive oil which has been saponified with sodium hydroxide, and methyl 2-hydroxy-4-phenylbutyrate as an insect repellent ingredient.ALSO:Insect repellant compositions comprise as active ingredient a compound of the formula R1CH2CH(OH)COR2 wherein R1 is hydrogen, benzyl, monochlorobenzyl or monomethyl benzyl; and when R1 is hydrogen, R2 is dialkylamino or dialkenylamino, each alkyl and alkenyl group containing up to 8 carbon atoms; and when R1 is benzyl, monochlorobenzyl or monomethyl benzyl, R2 is cyclohexyloxy, alkoxy, alkenyloxy, alkylamino, alkenylamino, alkylalkenyl-amino, dialkylamino or dialkenylamino, each alkyl and alkenyl group containing up to 8 carbon atoms; together with an extending agent. The compositions may be used in the form of solutions, suspensions, emulsions, aerosols, dusts, powders, ointments and soaps with the usual extending agents. For emulsions and suspensions, surface-active agents may also be included, e.g. soaps, Turkey-red oil, fatty alcohol sulphonates, fatty acid ester, quaternary ammonium compounds and condensation products of ethylene or propylene oxide with alcohols. Other insect repellants or insecticides, e.g. DDT, may additionally be present. In some of the examples, solutions of various of the active ingredients were applied to cotton bunting cloths in order to test the effectiveness of the insect repellants.
