Abstract
Unsaturated aldehydes and/or unsaturated carboxylic acids are prepared by interacting an olefin and oxygen in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature in the presence of a catalyst (a) containing molybdenum, tellurium, phosphorus and oxygen; or (b) comprising molybdenum, tellurium and oxygen only, the ratio of tellurium to molbydenum in the latter catalyst being less than 2.5 gram atoms of tellurium per gram atom of molybdenum. The catalyst may be unsupported or supported, suitable specified support materials being silica gel and titanium dioxide. Specified olefins are propene and isobutene. Examples describe the preparation of acrolein, methacrolein and acrylic acid. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 967,485 and 973,375.ALSO:Catalysts for the oxidation of olefins (see Division C2) (a) contain molybdenum, tellurium, phosphorus and oxygen, or (b) comprise molybdenum, tellurium and oxygen only, and, in the latter case, have a ratio of tellurium to molybdenum of less than 2,5 gram atoms of tellurium per gram atom of molybdenum. The catalysts may be unsupported or supported, specified supports being silica gel and titanium dioxide. Examples 2, 4-14 and 18 describe catalysts of type (a), some being diluted with glass particles. Example 1 describes a catalyst of type (b) which is supported on silica gel, graded to 14-36 B.S.S. mesh, and then diluted with four times its own volume of 8-12 B.S.S. mesh glass particles. Examples 15-17 describe catalysts of type (b) which are supported on titanium dioxide and ground in a ball-mill, those of Examples 15 and 16 being subsequently graded and diluted with glass particles as in Example 1. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 967,485 and 973,375.
