Abstract
Unsaturated aldehydes and/or unsaturated carboxylic acids are produced by a process comprising reacting an olefin with oxygen in the vapour phase at an elevated temperature over a catalyst comprising (i) a mixture of oxides of copper, arsenic and vanadium and/or (ii) a compound of copper with oxygen, acids of arsenic and vanadium. The product of the oxidation is an unsaturated aldehyde with a minor amount of the corresponding acid. The aldehyde may be subjected to further oxidation to give more acid. Preferably the catalyst contains phosphoric acid and may be deposited on conventional supporting solids. The catalyst may be static or fluidised. The mixture of olefine and oxygen may contain diluents, for example, nitrogen, steam or an alkane. The temperature for the process is preferably in the range 200-500 DEG C. In the examples (a) isobutene is converted to methacrolein and methacrylic acid and (b) propene is converted to acrolein and acrylic acid.
