Abstract

The invention comprises compounds of the formula <FORM:1013909/C2/1> and pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts and quaternary ammonium derivatives thereof wherein R2 represents hydrogen an alkanoyl or methoxyalkanoyl radical of 2 to 5 carbon atoms, an N-alkyl-carbamyl radical containing 1 to 4 carbon atoms, a morpholinocarbonyl (1-methyl-piperazino) carbonyl or piperidinocarbonyl radical or an N,N-dialkylcarbamyl group wherein the alkyl groups contain 1 to 4 carbon atoms, X represents hydrogen or chlorine, and R1 represents an alkylene radical containing 2 to 4 carbon atoms. The compounds of the invention are prepared by reacting an appropriate 10 - unsubstituted phenothiazine with a reactive ester of an alcohol of the formula <FORM:1013909/C2/2> wherein R21 is a radical splittable by hydrogenolysis, removing the group R21 by hydrogenolysis and, if desired, esterifying the free hydroxy compound. R21 is preferably a benzyl, benzyloxy or a carbobenzyloxy group. 1 - R21 - Oxyalkyl - 3 - hydroxymethyl - pyrrolidines are prepared by reacting itaconic acid or an ester thereof with an R21-oxyalkylamine to give a 1 - (R2 - oxyalkyl) - 5 - pyrrolidone - 3 - carboxyli acid or an ester thereof and reducing this with lithium aluminium hydride or hydrogen and a copper/chromoxide catalyst.
