Abstract
In a process for the preparation of adipic acid by the oxidation of cyclohexane in the liquid phase with molecular oxygen to primary oxidation products comprising chiefly cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol, followed by oxidation of these products to adipic acid, the adipic acid precursor products are obtained by (a) injecting water into the effluent from a liquid phase cyclohexane oxidation step; (b) separating the resulting mixture into a first oil phase and first aqueous phase; (c) removing substantially all the unoxidized cyclohexane from the first oil phase; (d) subjecting the resulting substantially cyclohexane free oil phase to evaporating conditions in the top portion of a standard rectification column; (e) subjecting the first aqueous phase to evaporating conditions in the bottom portion of said rectification column for a sufficient time to cause substantially all the water from the first aqueous phase to go overhead in the distillate obtained from said distillation with substantially all of said cyclohexane free first oil phase; (f) separating the resulting distillate mixture into a second oil and second aqueous phase; and (g) recovering the distillate second oil phase and combining it with selectively precipitated adipic acid precursors from the bottoms of said distillation, whereby an adipic acid precursor oil is obtained for use as the oxidizable feed. The subsequent oxidation is by nitric acid at between 130-190 DEG C. and a pressure between 50 and 150 pounds per square inch. The top and bottom distillation ranges are between 80 DEG and 120 DEG C. and 100 DEG and 140 DEG C. respectively. Specifications 1,013,617 and 1,013,618 are referred to.
