Abstract

1,013,438. Preventing aerial oxidation of developers. EASTMAN KODAK CO. May 29, 1962 [May 29, 1961], No. 20704/62. Heading G2C. Development of a silver halide emulsion layer is initiated or its rate increased by forming alkali in situ in aqueous medium by reaction of a slightly soluble polyvalent metal hydroxide having a solubility in water of an order not greater than that of lead hydroxide and having a formula Z(OH) n where n is 2, 3 or 4 and Z is a metal which is capable of forming a salt having a dissociation constant in water less than the said metal hydroxide and an alkali metal salt which forms said salt with the metal hydroxide. Specified metals Z are Al, Zn, Ti, Pb and Cd. Specified alkali metal salts are citrates, oxalates, fluorides, ferricyanides, tartrates, sulphites and alkali metal salts of poly (N-carboxyalkyl) derivatives of aliphatic amines e.g. ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid tri and tetra-salts, 1, 3-diamino- 2-propanol tetra-acetic acid tri and tetra-salts, trimethylamine tricarboxylic acid, di-#, #<SP>1</SP>-methylamino-diethylamine-dicarboxylic acid or di-#, #<SP>1</SP>-dimethylamino-diethylamine-tetracarboxylic acid. The developing agent, metal hydroxide and alkali metal salt may be contained in the light sensitive photographic element, a developing solution or a processing web such as that described in Specification 1,013,439 so long as the metal hydroxide and alkali metal salt are not present together. They may be present in the same layer as the silver halide of the light sensitive element or a separate layer. Specified developing agents employed are hydroguinone and substituted hydroquinones substituted with alkyl, alkoxy groups or halogen atoms, resonal, catechol, ascorbic acid , hydroquinone-sulphur-dioxide cloth rate, pyrogallol, gallic acid-p-methylamino phenol sulphate, 2, 4-diamino phenol, 3, 4-diamino phenol hydrochloride, 2, 4, 6-triamino phenol, glycine, N- (p-hydroxy phenyl glycine), 1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone 4, 4-dimethyl-1-phenyl-3-pyrazolidone and phenylene diamines. The developer solution, processing web or emulsion layer may contain antifoggants e.g. 3-mercapto-1, 2, 4-triazole, development restrainers e.g. alkali metal bromides or iodides, 5- methyl oxazeline-2-thiol, n-decyl dimenthyl hydrazinum perchlorate, 1-methyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydro-1, 3, 5-triazine-4-thiol and dithianonadecane-1, 19-bis (pyridinum-p-toluene sulphonate).
