Abstract

In a tap-changing system having diverter resistances R1, R2 and double break switches 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 as shown in Fig. 1, operation begins with the closing of switch 3 and the opening of switch 1. If the current being passed is not (or not much) in excess of the rated current for the apparatus the arcs at switch 1 are extinguished, owing to the current passing through zero, before switch 4 closes. If, however, a heavy overload current is flowing the arcs at 1 do not extinguish at the first passage of the current through zero but continue to burn until switch 2 opens after closure of switch 4, when the circulating current flows through R2 connected to 4 but not through any other diverter resistance. There is however a fourfold break in the current path from U1 and the breaks at switch 2 are smaller than at switch 1 owing to the kinetics of the system so that on recovery the arc will strike first at 2 and the current will flow through both R2 and R1 reducing the recover voltage at switch 1 so that the arcs do not restrike there.
