Abstract

Furan - 2 - carboxylic acid and 5 - methyl-furan-2-carboxylic acid can be obtained by oxidation of furfurol and 5-methyl-furfurol, respectively, b -[furyl-(2)]-acrylic acid and b -[5-methyl-furyl-(2)]-acrylic acid by condensation of furfurol and 5-methyl-furfurol, respectively, with malonic acid and subsequent decarboxylation, b -[furyl-(2)]-propionic acid and b -[5-methyl-furyl-(2)]-propionic acid by hydrogenation of b -[furyl-(2)]-acrylic acid and b -[5-methyl-furyl-(2)]-acrylic acid, respectively. In an analogous manner, the corresponding halogen-substituted derivatives are obtained from 5-bromo-furfurol or 5-chloro-furfurol. The Specification also discloses the sodium salts of b -[furyl-(2)]-acrylic acid, 5-methyl-furan-2-carboxylic acid and b -[5-methyl-furyl-(2)]-propionic acid and the sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium salts of b -[5-methyl-furyl-(2)]-acrylic acid.ALSO:Pharmaceutical agents e.g. cough syrups, cosmetics and perfumes are preserved by the incorporation therein of one or more substituted furans of the formula: <FORM:1012629/A5-A6/1> in which R1 represents -COOH, -CH2 -COOH or- CH=CH-COOH and R2 represents H, CH3 or halogen, preferably bromine or chlorine, and/or their water soluble alkali metal, calcium or magnesium salts. The compounds are applied in an acid medium at a pH of up to about 6, preferably in aqueous solution of pH between 2 and 5.5, and in concentrations between 0.01 and 0.5 per cent by weight, preferably between 0.03 and 0.3 per cent. They may be impregnated in paper packing material to protect the surface of packed goods and may be employed in conjunction with known preservatives such as benzoic, sorbic, formic, salicylic and p-chlorobenzoic acids. Furans specifically mentioned: furan-2-carboxylic acid, 5-methyl furan-2-carboxylic acid and sodium salt thereof, b -[furyl-(2)]-acrylic acid and sodium salt thereof, b -[5-methyl furyl-(2)]-acrylic acid and sodium, potassium, calcium or magnesium salts thereof, b -[furyl-(2)]-propionic acid, b -[5-methyl-furyl (2)]-propionic acid and sodium salt thereof, 5-chloro furan-2-carboxylic acid and 5-bromofuran -2-carboxylic acid.
