Abstract

Preparations for repelling insects are obtained by incorporating coumarin or a substitution product thereof, or phthalic acid diethyl ester, with a water-soluble salt of an alkaline earth metal or magnesium in an organic solvent such as ethyl or isopropyl alcohol or glycerin. A small amount of water may also be present. It is stated that double compounds are probably formed. Salts specified are the bromides of strontium, calcium and magnesium, the chlorides of calcium and magnesium, and magnesium sulphate.ALSO:Preparations for warding off insects are obtained by incorporating coumarin or a substitution product thereof, or phthalic acid diethylester, with a water-soluble salt of an alkaline earth metal or magnesium in an organic solvent, preferably an alcohol such as ethyl alcohol, isopropanol or glycerin. Water may be present in an amount not exceeding 15 per cent and perfumes or cosmetics may be added. It is stated that probably double compounds are formed between the organic compound and the salts when these are dissolved in the solvent. When an emulsion, paste or powder is required solution is effected in presence of agents such as kieselguhr, talcum, plaster of Paris, wax, starch, or octodecyl alcohol. According to examples coumarin may be mixed with calcium chloride and 96 per cent alcohol; or with clove oil, strontium bromide, calcium chloride and 85 per cent alcohol; or with calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, alcohol and water; or with 96 per cent alcohol, octodecyl alcohol, and calcium chloride; or phthalic acid diethyl ester may be mixed with magnesium bromide, calcium bromide, isopropanol and water.
