A device for the intermittent advance of a conveyer belt 1 of a film printing machine (not shown) has two pairs of belt driving elements each in the form of parallel rails 2, 2a, and 3, 3a, guided by rails 4. The driving elements are longitudinally reciprocated by a motor 7, gearing 8, and chain drives 9, 10 such that the movement of the pair of rails 2, 2a will be synchronous but oppositely oriented to the reciprocating movement of the pair of rails 3, 3a and vice versa. To establish a driving connection between the belt and the driving rails the latter are each provided with a suction channel 11 connected to a pump 14 via a reversing valve 13. Undesirable rubbing of the underside of the belt during the non- driving return movement of the driving rails is avoided by supporting each guide rail 4 on "pendulum" suspensions 16 secured to frame elements 17, 18. Longitudinal movement necessary to raise or lower the guide rails 4 is provided by hydraulic motors 39 connected in pairs to a reversing valve 42. A device 32 controls the raising and lowering of the rails 4, reversal and switching of the motor 7, and switching of the reversing valve 13 of the suction system.
