Abstract
Steel for deep-drawing purposes is tapped in an unkilled or partially killed state and treated by batch degasification to largely eliminate its free oxygen e.g. to a level of 0.005-0.01%. The steel is then treated with aluminium to further reduce its oxygen content to 0.001-0.005%, after which 0.05-1 Kgm. of boron is added per metric ton of steel. The steel is then poured into an ingot mould so that the rate of climb in the mould is at least 80 cm. per minute. The boron may be added in the form of ferroboron. The vacuum treatment may be carried out in apparatus of the type shown in Fig. 1 in which 5 is a container for additives.
