Abstract

1,011,128. Welding by pressure-soldering; jointing; forging; extruding. AMERICAN MACHINE & FOUNDRY CO. April 25, 1962 [May 1, 1961], No. 15746/62. Headings B3H, B3P, B3R and B3V. In friction sealing metal structures, wherein relative rotation is established between the structures, the structures are forced together until metal in the area of contact becomes plastic, the rotation is rapidly stopped and the plastic metal is allowed to solidify to form a seal, the structures are such that in the seal one has a circular edge formed by a circular side surface and a circular end surface transverse to the side surface and the other has a surface transverse to the end surface and a circular surface integral with the surface transverse to the end surface and opposite to the end surface. A thicker upper portion 22, Fig. 1, of a container section 21 contains a tapered channel 23 in which the end 26 of the other section 20 is rotated and forced downwardly. The end 26 becomes plastic and flows to fill the channel without forming a true weld. If the sections are both of aluminium or aluminium alloy the more massive portion 22 will not become entirely plastic. The end 26 may become welded to the channel if suitable materials are used. The channel walls need not be undercut and may be roughened and the lower end of the upper member may be cranked. A steel section 33, Fig. 5, has a channel 34 containing a ring 36 of low melting solder and when the upper steel section 35 is rotated and forced downwardly the solder flows about the lower edge 37 of the upper section. A circular disc is sealed within an aperture in a plate by engaging edges in recesses and rotating the disc so that plastic metal flows from both edges to fill the channels. A copper tube 64, Fig. 11, extends through a steel sheet 63 with clearance and a recessed copper sealing ring 65 is rotated and forced downwardly until the ring 65 becomes plastic and part thereof flows between the tube and sheet.
