Abstract

The invention comprises pyrimidine derivatives of the formula <FORM:1010997/C2/1> in which R is hydrogen or an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and m and n are each 0, 1 or 2. The compounds are prepared by reacting a 2,4-dihalopyrimidine of the formula <FORM:1010997/C2/2> in which Y is chlorine or bromine with a phenolic compound of the formula <FORM:1010997/C2/3> in which X is an alkali metal at a temperature low enough to substitute the halogen atom in the 2-position only, and then reacting the monohalo compound with the same or different phenolic compound to substitute the other halogen atom. The reaction may take place in an inert solvent and the temperature for the first stage is preferably 0 DEG to 15 DEG C. The final stage may be carried out under reflux in a volatile inert solvent.
