Abstract
<PICT:1010799/C6-C7/1> In order to electrolytically plate or anodize a surface uniformly, a uniform current density is applied to the surface. An electrode similar to that to be treated is divided into electrically isolated sections of equal area and subjected to electrolysis in a container 81. The current density at the separate sections is determined using an ammeter 91 which can be connected to the different sections in turn. To achieve a uniform current density, the position of electrodes 94, 95 is varied by moving their support framework which is adjustably mounted at 96, the configuration of the electrodes 94, 95 is varied or additional electrodes are used. The sectioned electrode is then replaced by the object to be treated. Instead of using only one ammeter, an ammeter may be connected to each section. Information storage devices may be made in this way by plating permanently magnetic material on to a copper screen as described in Specification 1,010,798.
