Abstract

Oil compositions comprises a major proportion of a hydrocarbon oil having a boiling range at atmospheric pressure between 80 DEG and 350 DEG C. and ash not exceeding 0.01% by weight, particularly an aviation kerosene, and a minor proportion of a compound of general formula XOC-Yn-COX1 where Y is selected from the group consisting of (i) a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbon group in which the main chain separating the XOC group and the COX1 group contains not more than four carbon atoms and there are not more than a total of six carbon atoms in any side chain or chains attached to the main chain, (ii) phenyl, (iii) alkyl phenyl wherein there is no alkyl group having more than 20 carbon atoms, (iv) an alicyclic group containing not more than six carbon atoms in the ring and not more than 20 carbon atoms in any side chain, n is 0 or 1, and X and X1 are each selected from the group consisting of (a) -OH, (b) -OHNR1R2R3, wherein R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and are either hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon groups, (c) -OHN\sE}R4, wherein R4 is the remainder of a heterocyclic ring which may in turn be part of a condensed ring system, (d) -NR5R6, wherein R5 and R6 are the same or different and are either hydrogen atoms or hydrocarbon groups, except that when n = 1 and the main chain separating the XOC and COX1 groups contains two carbon atoms, X and X1 being different may not be -OH and -NHR respectively, or -NHR and -OHNH2R respectively, wherein R is a monovalent aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 4-30 carbon atoms. Typical of many such compounds are oxalic acid, ammonium oxalate, quinoline oxalate, fumaric acid, acetylene dicarboxylic acid, phthalic acid, and 1-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid. The compositions may also contain an anti-oxidant (e.g. phenyl-alpha-naphthylamine), an anti-static agent (e.g. a mixture of chromium alkyl salicylate and calcium dioctyl sulphosuccinate) an anti-foam agent (e.g. a silicone), a metal deactivator (e.g. disalicylalethylene diamine), a cetane number improver (e.g. an organic nitrate) and a dispersing agent (e.g. a methacrylate/N-vinyl pyrrolidone copolymer). The compositions are also useful as compression ignition engine fuels and electrical oils.
