Abstract

1,010,618. Spray - producers. NIPPON KOGEI KOGYO CO. Ltd. March 13, 1963 [March 14, 1962], No. 9965/63. Heading B2F. A spray nozzle for applying a finely divided coating material to articles includes a narrow slit-shaped coating material outlet, closely adjacent narrow slit-shaped compressed air outlets on each side of said coating material outlet, and means for applying a voltage to the nozzle, so as to charge the atomized coating material electrostatically by corona discharge from said atomizing means. Coating material is fed along a passage 22 to a chamber 35, defined by a partition 33, and discharged through a narow slit-shaped outlet 32. Compressed air is fed to a chamber 36 and discharged through two narrow slit-shaped outlets 34 positioned closely adjacent and each side of the outlet 32. By this means, a relatively low pressure compressed air source may be used to atomize the coating material, whereby the initial velocity of the atomized particles is nearly zero. A valve rod 25, adapted to control the flow of coating material through the passage 22, carries a flat semicircular shaped plate 41 at its outer end for controlling the spray angle from 0-180 degrees. The plate 41 may have a sector cut from its central portion or may comprise a semicircular wire. In alternative constructions, the outlets 32, 34 comprise discontinuous, wavy, or cross-shaped narrow slits, or two sets of narrow slits arranged at an acute angle to each other. Further, the head 29 may have a cupid-bow, pear, arcuate, or polygonal shape in plan view, the flat plate 41 being shaped accordingly. Two corona discharge electrodes 40 are spaced each side of the outlets 32, 34, and the head 29 and discharge electrodes 40 are connected to a high voltage source for electrostatic spraying. The front ends of the electrodes and the outlets 34 have sharp edges to ensure a uniform corona discharge. The body 21 may be rotated about its axis or a line parallel thereto to obtain a circular spray pattern. Alternatively a plurality of atomizing heads 29 are secured to the periphery of a rotatable body with their direction of discharge arranged tangentially to the locus of rotation of the atomizing heads, Fig. 18 (not shown). The body is rotated at a velocity equal and opposite to the discharge velocity of the atomized particles and said particles deposited by means of an electrostatic attractive force.
