A V-belt 2 comprises a compression layer 4, e.g. of rubber, which may have one or more fabric jackets, and an outer tension band 6 of steel or solid nylon, secured thereto, the band 6 lying outside the pulley groove. In the modified V-belt shown at 3 the outer band 8 is convex. Bonding of the steel band may be facilitated by brass plating or by using adhesive cements.
