Abstract

An optical interferometer includes means for producing a difference in path length of a beam of radiation, said means comprising three plane mirror surfaces M 8 , M 9 , M 10 , the mirror surfaces M 8 , M 9 being rigidly connected together and mounted for rotation about an axis parallel to but not coincident with the intersection of the planes containing the mirrors M 8 , M 9 , the third mirror M 10 being fixed in a position such that its surface is perpendicular to a collimated beam of radiation which has been reflected by the mirrors M 8 ; M 9 in turn. As shown in Fig. 3, the mirrors M 8 , M 9 are rotated about a line contained in the plane of the mirror M 8 . The means of rotation comprises a screw 9 having a flat surface over which one end H of the lever L is arranged to move, the lever L lying in the plane of the mirror M 8 . The interferometer further comprises a semi-transparent plate B which splits a collumated beam into a transmitted beam and a reflected beam, the latter being directed on to the mirror M 8 by which it is reflected on to the mirrors M 9 , M 10 and thence returned to the plate B. The transmitted beam is also returned to the plate B where it is reflected on to condensing mirrors M 5 , M 4 and M 7 , M 6 . The returned reflected beam is transmitted by the plate B and passes to the mirrors M 4 -M 7 . This condensing system focusses the two beams at a point F and subsequently on a detector D. The two beams are brought into phase by rotation of the mirrors M 8 , M 9 , until the paths traversed by the initially reflected and transmitted beams are of equal length, when a strong signal will be produced by the detector. The apparatus may be used to deduce the wavelength distribution of radiation from the source, or the absorption characteristics of a sample may be determined by placing it at the focal point F.
