Abstract
1,010,033. Rotary-scythe mowers. FLYMO S.A. Oct. 6, 1964, No. 40646/64. Heading A1F. In a rotary-scythe mower having a cutter 5 rotatable with a power-driven vertical shaft 3, the cutter comprises arms 13 of resiliently flexible material which, when the mower is in operation, are subjected to spring forces tending to raise their outer end and to centrifugal forces tending to lower these ends so that their vertical position is dependent upon the speed of rotation of the cutter. The mower is of the type described in Specification 929,610 having no ground-wheels and being supported, in operation, upon an air-cushion produced by a fan 4 within the mowerhousing 2. Such mowers are difficult to start, in long grass, unless the outer ends 14 of the cutters are well clear of the ground. This is achieved by providing a blade of the form shown in Fig. 4 wherein the arms extend upwardly from bends 12 adjacent to the central part 11. The cutter-edges 14 are formed by bending downwardly the outermost parts of the arms. Shims 9 may be mounted on the shaft 3 to adjust the ground-clearance, and weights 8 (Fig. 1) may be mounted on the arms to increase the centrifugal forces. In a modification (Fig. 6, not shown) the flexibility of the arms is increased by providing cut-outs in the vicinity of the bends 12.
