Abstract
1,009,824. Universal joint. CAM GEARS Ltd. May 19, 1964 [May 23, 1963], No. 20697/63. Heading F2U. In a constant velocity ratio universal joint in which drive transmitting balls 7 lie in straight arcuate section grooves 6 in the opposed faces of interengaging axial forks 2, 3 and axial separation of the joint is prevented by a central ball 8 located in spherical recesses 8A formed internally in the fork arms 2, 3, the axes of the grooves lie in a plane containing the respective joint shaft axis, and the drive balls 7 engage recesses 8B in the centre ball 8 which thereby maintains the balls 7 in the bisection plane. In Fig. 7 (not shown), axial creep of the balls 7, when the joint shafts are axially aligned, is prevented by inclining the ball tracks 6, whilst in Fig. 8 (not shown) a similar effect is achieved by forming the ball tracks axially convergent and divergent in the respective fork ends 3, 2.
