Abstract

1,009,687. Contact members for switches. WILLIAM McGEOCH & CO. Ltd., and LOEWY ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 15, 1962 [Oct. 26, 1961], No. 38288/61. Heading H2B. A support panel carries a fluidoperated jack mechanism which moves a water-cooled currentcarrying bar into and out of contact with one or more contacts fixed to the panel. Plunger b<SP>3</SP> of pneumatically-operated jack b controls the movement of a contact bar c, which has ten spaced contacts c<SP>3</SP> on cylindrical contact members c<SP>2</SP> at each end thereof, and ten resilient laminated contact blades d mounted on an insert of panel a grip the contacts c<SP>3</SP> when the switch is closed. Water flows through a channel c<SP>1</SP> in the contact bar c and also through cooling tubes e, brazed to members c<SP>2</SP> and slidably mounted in copper tubes e<SP>1</SP>, #<SP>1</SP>, fixed to the panel to allow for movement of bar c by the jack mechanism, and through flexible hoses f to complete the cooling system. In a second embodiment, Fig. 3, a spring-urged contact bar r has a circular cooling channel r<SP>4</SP> and is insulatedly connected with the jack mechanism such that a cam slot s and pin s<SP>1</SP> ensure a wiping action when the switch contacts r<SP>1</SP>, t engage. Cooling tubes u<SP>1</SP>, u<SP>2</SP> are provided for bus-bar u, and a flexible hose v connects tube u<SP>2</SP> with cooling channel r<SP>4</SP>. In a further embodiment, a cooling tube is brazed to the side of the contact-carrying bar which is pivoted at one end and spring-urged towards the contact-closing position (Figs. 2, 2a, not shown).
