Abstract

1,009,662. Clutch control; friction clutches. USLAV PRO VYZKUM MOTOROVYCH VOZIDEL. June 20, 1963 [July 3, 1962], No. 24559/63. Headings F2C and F2L. A temperature responsive control for a friction clutch 2, 3 between a driving pulley 4 and an engine cooling fan 6 comprises a temperature sensitive element 17 in the water coolant system 31 that controls a valve 24 to supply pressure air from a reservoir 30 to a clutch disengaging servo 13, 14, 15 below a predetermined temperature, and above that temperature exhausts the servo whereupon springs 8 engage the clutch 2, 3. Below the predetermined temperature the valve spool 23 is in its lower position wherein it connects a pressure air supply port 26 to a clutch disengaging port 27 and closes a clutch exhaust port 28. As the temperate rises the element 17 acts against a return spring 19 to compress an adjustably prestressed spring 21. When the force of the spring 21 overcomes the air pressure acting on the end of the valve spool 23, the latter is moved rapidly up to the position shown wherein it closes the clutch disengaging port 27 and opens the exhaust port 28. On a fall in temperature the element 17 permits the return spring 19 to tension the spring 21 until the latter overcomes the air pressure on a flange F of the valve spool 23 whereupon the valve spool is moved rapidly down. A lamp 34 operated by an air pressure switch 33 indicates when the fan is in operation. In Fig. 8 (not shown) the spring 21 is replaced by a spring lever. Friction clutch.-The clutch disc 3 is urged by springs 8 in a hub 5 of the fan 6 into engagement with the clutch disc 2 fast with the pulley 4, and the disc 3 is connected by rods 9 to the disengaging servo housing 14, 15. A flexible diaphragm 13 of the servo bears against the fan hub 5 so that when pressure air is supplied through a line 10 and connector 32 to the servo, the housing 14, 15 moves left together with the rods 9 and clutch disc 3. The rods 9 are connected to the hub 5 by tangential spring strips (Figs. 2 and 3, not shown) or by a flexible ring (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown).
