Abstract

1,009,582. Wire strainers. RICHARD LEES Ltd., and R. R. OAKDEN. Aug. 17, 1964 [Aug. 21, 1963], No. 33046/63. Heading F2G. [Also in Division B5] A stress bed comprising a roller conveyer 5 and curing tunnel 8 receives green concrete from a moulding section 6 by means of a belt conveyer 7, and tensioned stressing wires 12 (one shown) surrounded by the concrete and held therein when it has hardened are continuously fed with the concrete from a reel 13 via a tensioning device 14. The wire is fed around grooved frusto-conical capstans 22 of the device 14, through a heated tunnel 15, where any tendency for the wire to creep under tension is accelerated, around a stressing pulley 16, maintained under constant load by an hydraulically or pneumatically operated piston and cylinder device 17, and finally into the concrete beam 9. Rubber-tyred rollers 19, Fig. 2, connected for rotation with the capstans and which functionally engage the beam 9, are continuously rotated thereby and may be additionally driven by a motor 30 to compensate if the wire is either over or underfed. The motor 30 is controlled by an electrical contact actuated by movement of the device 17. In a an alternative form of the tensioning device, the wire is fed by rollers 31 (Fig. 4, not shown) at a rate less than that at which the hardened concrete is fed from the curing tunnel 8 so that the wire is tensioned, and compensating action is produced by these rollers when similarly actuated by movement of device 17.
