Abstract

1,009,462. Selective retrieval storage system. SHORT BROTHERS & HARLAND Ltd. Feb. 27, 1964 [March 5, 1963; July 16, 1963], Nos. 8783/63 and 28167/63. Heading B8E. [Also in Division A4] Articles, which are stored in stacks of discrete compartments B disposed to form a circularly tiered rack, are transferred to and from the compartments B, from a charging station and to a discharging station respectively, by transfer units D vertically adjustable on a turntable C. The compartments B may comprise cantilever supported bins 10 above and below which sweep delivery and removal carrier members 15 and 16 respectively. The carrier members 15 and 16 which form the transfer units D, and the bins 10 may have cam - operated trap doors in their floors through which the articles are dropped. Alternatively, Fig. 5, carrier members 1511, 1611 may be movable horizontally by pneumatic jacks 1211, 1215. In operation, to deliver an article to a bin 10 the carrier member 1511 is moved towards the bin then given a sudden horizontal acceleration and returned by a powerful spring, causing the article to be delivered into the bin 10. The bin 10, which has an open end, is similarly movable to deposit an article on to the carrier member 1611. A delivery carrier member 152, Fig. 6, may alternatively have a sliding tray 1521, which is arrested by a tripping gear, mounted upon each end of the bins 10 whilst the carrier member 152 continues to move. When the tray is freed from the tripping gear it is returned by a spring 1524 thus depositing an article on the tray 1521 into the bin 10.
